Happy Birthday Texas!

2 March is traditionally set aside as the day of Texas’ birthday going back to the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence at Washington on the Brazos. (Hardcore Texas history people might argue that the Goliad declaration of December 1835 or even the San Antonio Declaration were the first ones). The Declaration is worth taking time to read. Although that latest trend is for nay sayers to proclaim that Texas was all about slavery, a reading of the Declaration will find it is about religious and educational freedoms. The people wanted the freedom to raise their children the way they wanted, they wanted representational government and wanted freedom of religion. Although some historians sought the removal of religious references from early Texas history, the importance of religious freedom is essential to understanding Texas Independence. It was about religious freedoms and to deny that is to deny an essential piece of Texas history.

People need to read the historic works for themselves, rather than to depend on the opinion of “experts” who have often revised matters to fit their personal biases.  In order to seek freedom and liberty, we must know our history and culture.
